From confusion to clarity: a typical journey

From “I have no idea what to do” to a concrete first step: a typical student journey
A very common profile I see:
Final‑year or recent graduate from a good university
Reasonable grades, some activities and internships
CV is “fine” but not strategic
When I ask, “What roles are you targeting?” the answer is:
“I’m quite open – maybe marketing, consulting… or finance?”
In other words: smart and capable, but unfocused.
Drawing on my combined background in head‑hunting / executive search and career coaching (mainly across Asia Pacific but also with clients globally), here’s how we typically work together in the Core Career Launch or Premium Career Accelerator programmes:
Clarify direction
We narrow from “anything” to 2–3 realistic role types, and identify a few priority markets, depending on the student’s interests and mobility.
Rebuild CV and LinkedIn to speak employer language
We move from task descriptions to results, skills and relevance. Often the evidence is already there – it just needs to be framed the way recruiters and hiring managers read it.
Prepare for real interviews
We build a “story bank”: achievements, challenges, failures and learning. Then we practise through mock interviews so answers are structured, confident and authentic.
Design a short, focused job‑search plan
Instead of random applications, we set up a 4–8 week plan:
Target roles and industries
Volume and quality of applications
Simple, age‑appropriate networking actions
When parents are involved (particularly in the Premium programme), they also receive:
A realistic view of timelines and probabilities
Suggestions on how to support without taking over
Periodic updates so they know progress is happening, even if markets are slow
The outcome is not “instant magic”, but very often a shift from:
Confusion → clarity
Anxiety → structure and action
Passive waiting → active ownership of the job search
