Not All Internships Are Equal: How “Tick‑Box Experience” Quietly Wastes Your Child’s Most Valuable Years
In Asia‑Pacific, many parents are extremely proactive:
Lining up internships every summer
Enrolling children in programmes, camps, and “CV boosters”
Pushing for more and more experiences
On paper, it looks impressive. But from the employer side, we are seeing a worrying pattern:
Students are busier than ever, yet still arrive at graduation with very weak differentiation.
At TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE, we speak with hiring managers across Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and the wider region. What they tell us is clear:
“We don’t need more busy CVs.We need evidence that this person can actually think, deliver, and grow.”
This article is for parents who are already investing so much in internships and activities —and want to be absolutely sure that effort is compounding into real career advantage, not just noise.
1. The rise of “tick‑box internships” – and why employers are unimpressed
In the last 5–10 years, we’ve seen a huge growth in:
Short, generic internships
Brand‑name programmes with very light responsibilities
Remote “projects” where the student never fully owns anything
From a parent’s perspective, it feels safe:
“At least they are doing something.”
“Big name on the CV must be good.”
From an employer’s perspective, when they see:
4–6 internships
No clear story
No concrete outcomes
the internal reaction is often:
“Busy, but what did they actually do?”
The harsh truth is: A long list of shallow experiences can make your child look unfocused and replaceable, not impressive.
2. What high‑quality internships really signal to employers
Across the Asia‑Pacific and global firms we work with, high‑quality internships tend to show three things:
Ownership of a real piece of work
Not just “helping with admin”
A small project, process, or outcome that was the student’s responsibility
Exposure to real stakeholders
Presenting to a manager / team
Joining client or internal meetings with a clear role
Receiving and acting on feedback
Evidence of learning and reflection
Can clearly explain: “What was the problem? What did you do? What changed?”
Knows what they liked / disliked and what this means for next steps
When these elements are present, even one or two internships can be more powerful than five or six lightweight ones.
3. The hidden cost of “filling every holiday” with low‑impact experience
Parents often ask:
“Isn’t it better to have something rather than nothing?”
Not always.
The hidden risks of tick‑box internships:
Time lost: The 2–3 years where your child could build deep, meaningful experience are spent collecting logos instead.
Blurred story: A CV full of unrelated, shallow roles makes it harder for employers to see a clear direction or strength.
False sense of security: Parents and students feel “we’ve done so much”,only to be shocked in final year when rejections still come.
By the time this reality shows up in offers and salaries, it is too late to re‑live those summers.
This is where FOMO becomes very real:
While your child was busy being “busy”,other students were quietly building sharp, focused, high‑impact experience that now sets them apart.
4. How TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE helps families move from “busy” to “strategic”
Our Student & Graduate Career Coaching is designed to shift your child from:
“Do as many things as possible”to“Do the right things, in the right sequence, and learn how to tell that story.”
We support students and graduates to:
Audit their past experience
Distinguish between “noise” and “signal”
Identify 2–3 experiences to deepen and highlight
Design a targeted 12–24 month experience roadmap
Choose internships, roles and projects that actually build employer‑visible skills
Prioritise depth over random quantity
Maximise each opportunity
Prepare before internships start:
What to ask
How to build trust
Where to volunteer for more responsibility
Debrief afterwards:
Turn tasks into achievements
Capture stories for CV and interviews
Translate experience into competitive advantage on paper and in person
Rewrite CV and LinkedIn to reflect real impact
Practise interview answers that go beyond “I learnt communication and teamwork”
For Asia‑Pacific families whose children may study or work globally,we also align strategies with international hiring standards, not just local expectations.
5. If your child is already “busy”, the real question is: are they ahead?
In a market where:
More students study abroad
More families invest in extra programmes
More CVs are full of internships
“Busy” is no longer a differentiator. Strategic and effective is.
If you suspect that:
Your child’s CV is long, but not sharp
Their internships sound impressive, but feel shallow
You’re not sure how these experiences compare to top candidates in the region
then now is the time to course‑correct.
Waiting until final year means:
The best windows for meaningful experience will have closed
You will be competing against students who used those same years very differently
If you would like to shift from tick‑box activities to a career‑building strategy, we would be glad to support you.
