Don’t Wait Until Final Year: Ages 18–25 Quietly Shape the Next 20 Years

Many students tell us things like:
“I’ll think about careers later. Right now I just want to focus on my studies.”“We can sort out job applications in final year. There’s still time.”
Many parents also reassure themselves:
“Let them enjoy being a student first. In the last year we’ll all sit down and figure things out.”
From our vantage point working with students, graduates, and employers across Asia,we see a different picture:
The years from 18–25 are a quiet but powerful “foundation window”.
During these years, habits, mindset, and early work experiences start to compound:
Used well, they build advantages that grow year after year;
Ignored, they create small gaps that may only become obvious 10–20 years later—
when they are much harder to fix.
1. Two Common Paths We See in Asia
Student A – Starts exploring around 19
In 2nd–3rd year, they try 1–2 internships or part‑time roles (not perfect, but there is real learning).
They begin to see roughly what fits and what clearly doesn’t.
They start building basic professional habits:
asking seniors or working professionals for coffee chats;
asking for feedback after interviews or projects.
Student B – Delays everything until final year
Through university, they focus almost entirely on grades and social life;
There is very little active exploration of industries or day‑to‑day job realities.
At 22–23, they suddenly realise:
“I don’t actually know what I want.”
“My CV is almost empty and not very focused.”
By around age 25, their situations are usually very different:
Student A
is not necessarily a “superstar”,
but has a clearer sense of what suits them and what doesn’t;
handles interviews and job changes with more calm and confidence.
Student B
often feels “behind”;
is constantly comparing with peers and feeling under pressure;
may rush into poorly‑matched jobs just to “catch up”, then pay the price later in burnout or frequent job‑hopping.
This difference doesn’t appear overnight at 25. It grows quietly from many small, invisible choices between 18–22.
2. “Starting Early” ≠ “Piling on More Pressure”
When we talk about “starting early”, many parents worry:
“Will this put too much pressure on them?”“Will it make them more anxious?”
In our view, starting early does not mean:
forcing an 18‑year‑old to decide their lifetime career;
filling every spare hour with courses, exams, and certificates.
Instead, “starting early” can be gentle and very human:
a part‑time or volunteer role with real learning value, not only “clock in and get paid”;
an internship that includes reflection, not just a new line on the CV:
“What did I actually learn here?”
“Which tasks gave me energy? Which ones drained me?”
a monthly conversation with a working professional:
a relative, neighbour, friend, or alumnus;
asking about their industry, daily work, and how they made their choices.
The goal is not to “lock in a path early”.The goal is to practice, earlier:
knowing yourself,understanding the real world,and learning how to make choices.
3. How TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE Helps Students Use This “Golden Window”
In our Student & Graduate Career Coaching at TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE,we work with both students and parents to make the most of ages 18–25.
(1) Designing a 12–24 Month “Exploration Plan”
We help students:
clarify 1–3 realistic directions to explore in the next 12–24 months (for example: a couple of industries, or two different types of roles);
map out:
potential summer internships and term‑time projects;
meaningful student organisations, competitions, or volunteering.
This plan is a living document, not a fixed contract.We revisit and update it regularly, so students move from passively waiting for opportunitiesto actively creating and choosing opportunities.
(2) Turning Every Experience into Clear “Clues”
Many students finish an internship and only add a single line to their CV:
“2025 Summer Intern – XXX Company”
In our coaching sessions, we go deeper by asking:
Which tasks made you feel most engaged and “in flow”?
Did you discover any unexpected strengths – e.g. explaining ideas, organising information, writing, data, coordination?
Which parts did you really not enjoy? If a job were mostly those tasks, would it be sustainable for you?
We write these answers down and keep a record. Over time, this becomes a personal “map of clues”about their strengths, preferences, and non‑negotiables.
(3) Avoiding the Trap of “Busy but Not Growing”
On the surface, many students look extremely busy:
juggling several unrelated, unpaid roles “just to fill the CV”;
joining every possible competition and event, but never reflecting;
blindly rushing into “hot” industries that everyone talks about, without any real curiosity about the actual work.
We help students distinguish:
which experiences truly build skills, clarity, and confidence;
which ones mainly drain time and energy without moving them forward.
This often means doing fewer things, but doing them more deeply.
(4) Connecting Early Experiences to a Longer‑Term Life Vision
Ultimately, this is not only about “getting a job”.
It is about helping a young adult to:
build self‑awareness: “What kind of person am I? What do I value?”
develop resilience: “When things change or go wrong, how do I respond and adapt?”
form a healthier view of work and success: not only chasing brand names and titles, but choosing paths that support the kind of life they truly want.
These skills and mindsets are the foundation of a stable, meaningful adulthood.And the most natural time to start building them is between 18 and 25.
We’d Be Honoured to Support You and Your Child
If you’re a parent who wants your son or daughter to use these years wisely—or a student / recent graduate who wants clarity and a practical plan — we’d be happy to discuss how our Student & Graduate Career Coaching can support you.
Whether you are just starting to think about the future,or already feeling stuck and overwhelmed,there are always next steps we can design together.

用得好,優勢會越積越多;
大二、大三已經試做 1–2 份實習或 part‑time(唔一定完美,但有真實學習)。
同師兄師姐/前輩約 coffee chat;
大學四年幾乎只專注於成績同社交生活;
學生 A
但大致知道自己啲咩較適合、啲咩唔太啱;
好易覺得自己「落後咗」;
成日同同齡人比較,焦慮感好重;
要求 18 歲就決定一生做咩工;
3. TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE
可以爭取嘅暑期實習、學期中項目;
接好多完全無關、冇結構性學習嘅無薪工作,只係為咗「堆 CV」;
報讀好多活動,但從來唔做反思同總結;
邊啲經驗真係有學習同成長價值;
