Your Child’s Dream Job Is Not the End Goal: Why Asia‑Pacific Families Need a 10‑Year Life & Career Plan

Many Asia‑Pacific parents tell us:

  • “We just want our child to find a good job.”

  • “Once they get into a solid company, they will be fine.”

But in today’s market, we see something different.

Even students who land their so‑called “dream job” can feel lost, stuck or burnt out within 2–3 years if there is no bigger plan behind it.

At TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE, we don’t just ask,“What job do you want after graduation?”We ask:

“Who do you want to be in 10 years, and how can your first few jobs build towards that life?”

This is not theory. Let’s look at two simple stories.

1. Two graduates, same starting point, very different 5‑year outcomes

Example 1 – Emily (Hong Kong): “Dream job, no plan”

  • Emily studied business, got a well‑paid role in a big regional bank.

  • Parents were relieved: “Stable, good brand, problem solved.”

  • She worked hard, but never thought deeply about:

    • What she was learning,

    • Where this path could lead,

    • Whether it matched her long‑term life goals.

After 3 years:

  • Promotion was slow, work felt repetitive.

  • She didn’t know what other options existed.

  • The idea of changing direction felt risky and frightening.

The dream job slowly became a comfortable trap.

Example 2 – Daniel (Singapore): “Intentional pathway, not just job”

  • Daniel also joined a strong regional firm in consulting.

  • With coaching, he mapped a 10‑year picture:

    • Skills he wanted (strategy, communication, leadership)

    • Lifestyle he preferred (regional travel but not 24/7 hustle forever)

    • Possible roles in 5–7 years (regional manager, then maybe own venture)

Each year, we helped him:

  • Choose projects that moved him closer to that picture

  • Build relationships beyond his immediate team

  • Reflect on what he liked / disliked and adjust direction

After 5 years:

  • His title is not just “one level up”;

  • He has:

    • A clear professional identity,

    • A network across Asia‑Pacific,

    • Options in 2–3 different directions.

Same starting point – but one was job‑focused, the other life‑focused.

2. Why “getting a job” is no longer enough

Today’s graduates face:

  • Jobs that change every few years

  • Industries that rise and fall within a decade

  • Pressure not only to work, but to stay mentally and emotionally healthy

If the only goal is:

“Just get a good job first, we’ll see later,”

then by the time “later” comes:

  • They may already be tired, stuck and confused.

  • Personal life decisions (relationship, family, location) become more complex.

  • Changing direction becomes harder emotionally and financially.

This is why we tell parents:

Getting the first job is important, but how your child thinks about the next 10 years is what will truly shape their life.

3. What students can prepare now (beyond CV and grades)

Here are practical, everyday actions students can start immediately:

  1. Write a simple 10‑year picture (without over‑controlling it)

    • Where might you be living?

    • What kind of problems do you want to solve?

    • What kind of people do you want around you?

  2. Track learning, not just achievements

    • Every semester / internship:

      • What did I learn about myself?

      • What type of work energised me? What drained me?

  3. Test small, before big decisions

    • Shadow someone for a day

    • Do a short project or competition

    • Volunteer in a role that mimics the job you think you want

  4. Build habits that protect long‑term performance

    • Sleep, stress management, basic financial habits

    • These are not “soft” topics; they decide whether your child can sustain success.

4. How TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE helps students build a life & career portfolio

In our Student & Graduate Career Coaching, we work with students and families to:

  1. Clarify the 10‑year direction without locking them in

    • We explore possibilities together,

    • Turn them into a flexible roadmap,

    • Make space for change, but avoid aimless drifting.

  2. Connect today’s choices with tomorrow’s options

    • School / major / internship choices are evaluated by:

“How does this build skills, network or clarity for your 10‑year picture?”

  3. Develop a stronger mindset

    • From “I hope I’m lucky”

    • To “I know how to learn, adapt and redesign my path when needed.”

  4. Guide both student and parent to work as a team

    • Parents stop over‑controlling small details

    • Students take more ownership of their long‑term direction

5. The urgency: the years you can’t get back

For most young people, the age 18–28 window is critical:

  • These years shape skills, confidence, network and habits.

  • Done well, they create compounding advantages.

  • Done randomly, they create hidden gaps that appear later.

You cannot add extra years to this window later. You can only decide how intentionally you use it now.

If you feel:

  • Your child is studying hard but has no clear long‑term picture

  • You worry they might end up in a “comfortable trap” job

  • You want them to build a whole life, not just a CV

we would be glad to support you.

TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE,

Daniel

4. TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE
