Is Your Child Really “Job‑Ready”? A Practical Checklist for Parents (Before It’s Too Late)

Many parents tell us:

“My child is smart and hardworking – I’m sure they’ll find something.”

We hear this every year. We also see equally bright young people who, months after graduation, are still:

  • Unsure what to apply for

  • Sending out CVs with no response

  • Feeling increasingly behind their peers

The difference is not intelligence. It’s whether they are truly job‑ready – in the way employers define it.

Here is a practical checklist you can use as a parent to assess your child’s readiness, and what to do if you find gaps.

1. Direction: Can they name 2–3 realistic target roles?

Job‑ready students can clearly answer:

  • “I am targeting roles like ___, ___ and ___.”

  • “Because my strengths are ___ and I’ve shown them by ___.”

If your child can only say “Anything in business” or “I’m keeping my options open”, they are not yet ready.

What to do:Work on career clarity first – strengths, interests, realistic paths – instead of jumping straight into random applications.

2. CV: Is it employer‑ready, not just school‑ready?

A job‑ready CV:

  • Highlights outcomes and impact, not just duties

  • Is structured and easy to scan in 15–30 seconds

  • Speaks the language of the target industry, not just academic achievements

If their CV looks like a school activity list or is still in a basic template provided by a friend, they’re losing ground.

3. LinkedIn: Is it complete, focused and active?

Ask yourself:

  • Does your child have a professional photo, headline and summary?

  • Would a recruiter understand in 10 seconds what roles they are looking for?

  • Is there evidence of projects, skills and initiative?

If LinkedIn is empty or non‑existent, your child is invisible to many employers.

4. Job Search Strategy: Do they have a weekly plan?

Job‑ready students can answer:

  • “These are the companies I’m targeting this month.”

  • “This is how many quality applications I’m sending each week.”

  • “Here’s how I’m tracking responses and following up.”

If your child is just scrolling job boards and “seeing what’s out there”, they’re reacting, not leading.

5. Interview Skills: Have they practised under pressure?

Being ready in your head is different from being ready in the room.

Ask your child:

  • “Have you done at least 2–3 mock interviews with someone who will be honest with you?”

  • “Do you know how to answer ‘Tell me about yourself’ in under 2 minutes?”

  • “Can you explain a failure or challenge without sounding defensive?”

If the answer is “no”, they’re likely to learn the hard way – by losing real opportunities.

6. Professional Presence: Do they understand workplace expectations?

Job‑ready graduates:

  • Know how to write a professional email

  • Understand basic meeting etiquette, punctuality and follow‑through

  • Have a realistic view of starting responsibilities and progression

If your child still thinks mainly in terms of “What time can I leave?” and “How many days of holiday?”, some mindset work is needed.

If You See Gaps – This Is Your Window

If, while reading this checklist, you realise your child is not yet truly job‑ready, you are not alone. Many families only recognise this after a few painful months of silence from employers.

The good news:With a focused 4–8 week coaching roadmap, these gaps can be identified and closed quickly.

At TROUVÉ EXECUTIVE, we work with students and graduates to:

  • Build clarity on direction

  • Upgrade CV and LinkedIn to a professional standard

  • Create a structured, realistic job search plan

  • Practise interviews until confidence and clarity show up in the room, not only on paper

  • Prepare them for real‑world workplace expectations

Why Acting Now

Every year, there is a moment when some students suddenly accelerate:

  • They get their first interviews

  • They post about offers on LinkedIn

  • Their friends start to ask, “How did you manage that?”

By then, it’s clear who prepared early – and who is scrambling to catch up.

If you want your child to be the one creating that sense of FOMO among peers, not feeling it themselves, the preparation has to start now, not “later”.

Let’s Make Your Child Job‑Ready – Before the Market Decides for Them

If you’d like an honest, professional view of your child’s readiness, we invite you to book a conversation.

The graduate job market will make a judgment on your child’s readiness either way.

The question is: do you want to shape that outcome now – or react to it later?

(Job‑Ready)

(Marketing Assistant)

(Business Development / Sales Trainee)

(Product / Project Assistant))

(Summary/About)
